STEVE.

STEVE is caused by a wide (25km) Ribbon of hot (3,000ºC) gases 450km high in the sky moving at speeds of 6km/sec. Compare this to the 10m/sec just outside the Ribbon. This particular evening, the Ribbon stretched right overhead across the sky West-East.
STEVE often is associated with strong Auroral displays; but another phenomenon can often also be seen with STEVE, green Picket Fence Aurora displays.
I have only witnessed STEVE thrice, and count myself very lucky.
