Sabine's Gull
Xema sabini
North America · 6 photographs
Sabine's Gulls, like the Arctic Tern, breed in the Arctic Tundra and are pelagic during non-breeding periods. The Pacific Coast gulls move down to the northern coasts of Chile in winter. They are rarely found inland, and we were lucky to have these two juveniles find their way to a pond in the Lower Mainland, otherwise such close-up views would be impossible without heading to sea.
This flock happened to have a brief stopover in the Vancouver Harbour area.
