IC 1396 is a vast region of ionised gas in Cepheus, and the Elephant Trunk is the dense column of cold gas and dust silhouetted against it. Bright young stars at the tip are actively eroding the trunk and triggering new star formation inside. Photographed in narrowband from a Bortle-7 backyard.
